At Forest of Dean Scanning Services, we're exploring how AI can help people rediscover memories that may have faded with time.
More Than Simply Scanning a Photograph
Traditional scanning creates a digital copy of an original photograph, negative or slide.
However, if the original is faded, scratched, blurred or discoloured, those imperfections may also appear in the digital version.
This is where modern image enhancement technology can help.
What Can AI Do?
Depending on the condition and quality of the original, AI software may be able to:
Improve the apparent sharpness of an image.
Reduce unwanted grain and digital noise.
Improve colour balance and contrast.
Enhance the resolution of photographs.
Add colour to black-and-white photographs.
Stabilise shaky video footage.
Reduce flickering in old cine film.
The results can sometimes be remarkable, particularly when working with good-quality original material.
Is AI Restoration Always Accurate?
It's important to understand that AI cannot recover every detail that has been lost.
Sometimes it generates new details based on what it predicts should be present. This can make an image appear clearer without necessarily making it more historically accurate.
For important family photographs, retaining an unaltered digital copy alongside any enhanced version is a sensible approach.
Old Cine Film Can Be Particularly Interesting
Imagine discovering an old 8mm cine film showing your grandparents enjoying a family holiday in the 1960s.
The original footage might be grainy, shaky and difficult to see clearly.
Digitisation, followed by carefully chosen enhancement techniques, may make that footage easier to watch and enjoy.
It won't transform every recording into modern high-definition video, but it can make a meaningful difference.
Discover What Might Be Possible
Forest of Dean Scanning Services offers digital scanning and AI enhancement options for photographs and video recordings.
Whether you have a single treasured family photograph or a collection of old cine films, we'd be happy to discuss what might be possible.
Sometimes technology can help us see the past in a whole new light.
